F1 Approaches Season Finale with Key Decisions Ahead: Lawson’s Audition, Alonso’s Safety Car Theory, and Sauber’s Driver Search”

Formula 1 is heading into a thrilling conclusion with six races left to determine the champions. BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson answers questions on various topics in the sport ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

Regarding Liam Lawson, he will have six races with Red Bull Racing, viewed as an audition for a potential seat in 2025. His performance will be closely watched, but it’s unclear which team he might end up with. While junior programs in F1 focus on talent, there is growing concern that rising costs in motorsport, especially at the junior levels, might result in only wealthy drivers making it to F1, rather than the most talented ones. Lewis Hamilton has raised this issue, but so far, the sport’s leadership has not made significant moves to address it.

On the lack of safety cars in recent races, Fernando Alonso believes the reason is that drivers are not pushing their cars to the limit. Modern F1 cars are tricky to handle, and driving at 90% is sometimes faster, as it reduces the risk of errors. With drivers managing tires and fuel efficiency, fewer accidents occur, leading to fewer safety cars. However, this cautious driving approach has been a feature for years due to the behavior of Pirelli tires, which overheat when pushed too hard. The lack of safety cars could also be a statistical anomaly, as incidents depend on various factors, including weather conditions.

As for Sauber’s open seat for next season, the team is reportedly considering Valtteri Bottas, Franco Colapinto, Formula 2 leader Gabriel Bortoleto, and former Haas driver Mick Schumacher. Sauber, which will become Audi in the future, is in no rush to decide and is weighing the balance between choosing an experienced driver or a rookie. They expect to make a decision by mid-November at the latest.
