The FIA has imposed a €5,000 fine on Ferrari following an incident during practice at the Imola Grand Prix. A representative from Ferrari was called before the stewards to address concerns regarding a potential violation of Technical Directive 003Q 2.g.ii, which pertains to tire usage protocols.
The FIA’s investigation concluded that Ferrari had not adhered to the necessary procedures outlined in the directive. According to the FIA’s statement, Technical Directive 003G, specifically point 2 g.ii, allows tires to be reused during a single session. However, it stipulates that teams must first obtain tire temperature data before making any adjustments to the tires, including altering tire pressures.
The representative from Ferrari admitted that these required procedures were overlooked, constituting a breach of Article 30.5 a) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. The stewards recognized that the infringement took place during a Free Practice session, and in line with previous cases involving similar tire-related violations, they decided to impose a fine of €5,000.
A comparable situation occurred with the Mercedes team during the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix when Lewis Hamilton and George Russell faced scrutiny for modifying tire pressure in the garage. This incident arose after the starting procedure for the race was delayed by 10 minutes, allowing the team to adjust tire pressures. However, both Hamilton and Russell managed to avoid any sporting penalties in that instance.
Instead, the Mercedes team was fined €5,000 for each driver, totaling €10,000 for the tire infringement. This incident highlights the importance of following regulations set forth by the FIA regarding tire management, as teams must ensure compliance to avoid financial penalties and potential repercussions in future events.
The FIA’s decisions reflect a commitment to maintaining fair competition and safety standards in Formula One. Teams are reminded to strictly adhere to all technical directives and regulations to avoid similar penalties in the future. As the season progresses, teams will need to remain vigilant in their operations to ensure they comply with the evolving rules and standards
