Uncertainty Looms Over Imola’s Future on the F1 Calendar

Imola’s long-term status as a Formula 1 venue is in serious doubt, with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali suggesting the iconic Italian circuit may be dropped from the calendar after 2025.

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, held at Imola since its return in 2020, is scheduled to take place this year from May 16–18. However, with the current contract expiring afterward and no renewal yet in place, the track’s future appears uncertain.

Speaking on the La Politica nel Pallone podcast, Domenicali highlighted the challenges of hosting multiple races in a single country, particularly as the sport grows and demand increases worldwide.

“Italy has always been a key part of Formula 1’s legacy,” Domenicali said. “But with the global interest in F1 rising, it’s becoming more difficult to justify having two races in the same country. Discussions will continue, but maintaining this setup going forward seems unlikely.”

With Monza home of the Italian Grand Prix  secured on the calendar through 2031, Imola could be the one to make way.

Formula 1 is currently at its largest, with 24 races scheduled for the 2025 season. As the championship expands to new global markets such as Miami, Las Vegas, and potentially Thailand or South Africa, older circuits are under increasing pressure to retain their slots.

Plans to rotate the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps from 2027 and the exit of the Dutch GP after 2026 show that even iconic tracks aren’t guaranteed a place. Unless a new agreement is reached soon, Imola could be next to disappear from the F1 schedule.
