Jack Doohan Promoted to Alpine F1 for 2025: A New Chapter Begins Alongside Pierre Gasly
In a significant move that signals the beginning of a new era for Alpine, the French Formula 1 team has announced that Jack Doohan will step up to a full-time race seat in 2025. The 21-year-old Australian, who has been part of Alpine’s driver academy since 2022, will replace Esteban Ocon and partner Pierre Gasly as the team looks to build on its recent momentum.
Doohan, the son of five-time 500cc motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan, has been steadily rising through the ranks of motorsport, impressing many with his skill, determination, and raw speed. His promotion to a full-time F1 seat is the culmination of years of hard work and is a testament to Alpine’s confidence in his potential.
Jack Doohan’s path to Formula 1 has been marked by his consistent performance across various racing categories. After leaving the Red Bull junior program in 2022, Doohan joined Alpine’s academy, where he quickly made a name for himself. He finished third in the 2023 Formula 2 championship, securing three race wins and demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest levels of junior motorsport. This success followed a runner-up finish in the 2021 Formula 3 championship, further solidifying his reputation as a future F1 star.
Doohan’s promotion to Alpine’s F1 team has been a topic of speculation throughout the 2024 season, with rumors intensifying after news broke that Esteban Ocon would leave the team to join Haas in 2025. The confirmation came as the F1 paddock reconvened at Zandvoort for the second half of the season, with Alpine officially announcing that Doohan would take up the race seat alongside Pierre Gasly.
For Doohan, the promotion to a full-time race seat represents the realization of a lifelong dream. “I am so happy to secure promotion into a full-time race seat in 2025 with BWT Alpine F1 Team,” Doohan said in a statement. “I am very grateful for the trust and belief by the team’s senior management. There is so much work ahead to be prepared and ready, and I will give my best in the meantime to absorb as much information and knowledge to be ready for the step up.”
Doohan’s preparation for this opportunity has been extensive. Over the past two years, he has amassed significant experience in F1 machinery, participating in numerous private tests and appearing in six FP1 sessions. These include stints in Mexico and Abu Dhabi in 2022 and 2023, as well as in Canada and Britain earlier this year. His work in these sessions has not only helped him familiarize himself with the car but has also given the team valuable data and insights into his driving style and capabilities.
Alpine’s newly appointed Team Principal, Oliver Oakes, who has a long history with Doohan, expressed his enthusiasm for the young driver’s promotion. Oakes, who previously managed Doohan in Asian F3 with the Hitech Grand Prix junior outfit, highlighted the significance of this milestone for both the driver and the team.
“We are very excited to promote Jack into the race seat from next season and, in doing so, giving him the opportunity to showcase his skill and talent in Formula 1,” Oakes said. “Jack will become the first driver to graduate from the Alpine Academy into a race driver position with the team, so that is exceptionally pleasing for the team and its young driver pathway. Personally, I have worked with Jack back in 2019, and I am fully aware of his raw talent and potential.”
Oakes also noted that the combination of Doohan’s youthful energy and Gasly’s experience will provide Alpine with a well-balanced driver lineup. “Alongside Pierre, we have a well-balanced driver line-up with a good combination between youthful energy, experience, and pure speed. We look forward to working with both Jack and Pierre to keep developing the car and bring the team up the grid.”
While Doohan’s focus is now on preparing for his debut season in 2025, he will continue his role as Alpine’s reserve driver for the remainder of the current season. This includes participating in regular testing with the 2022-spec A522 F1 car and contributing to the team’s simulator work on select race weekends.
For Alpine, Doohan’s promotion is a significant step forward in their long-term strategy to develop homegrown talent and compete at the highest level. With Doohan’s raw talent and Gasly’s experience, the team is optimistic about its prospects in 2025 and beyond.
As the motorsport world eagerly anticipates the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Jack Doohan as he takes on the challenge of Formula 1. With a strong support system, a proven track record, and the determination to succeed, Doohan is poised to make a lasting impact in the sport’s top tier.
