Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc Admit to Late-Night Chess Battles and Some Sneaky Moves
Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have taken their competitive streak off the Formula 1 circuit and into their bedrooms revealing they regularly go head-to-head in online chess matches before bed. Speaking at a fan event during the Bahrain Grand Prix, the pair shared how their friendly rivalry has become a nightly routine, often played from their respective homes in London and Monaco.
Their chess habit first caught attention at the 2025 season launch, where the two were spotted focused more on a game of chess than the event’s entertainment. But as they revealed to fans, it wasn’t a one-time match they frequently face off late at night.
Leclerc recounted one evening where the score was tied 4-4:
“He didn’t want to end the night on a draw,” he said. “He was in London, I was in Monaco, and he pushed for one more game.”
Hamilton revealed that one of those matches even took place mid-flight:
“I was on a plane to Japan, found Wi-Fi, and started playing him. His moves were so sharp I thought, ‘He must be getting help!’ So I found a site that suggests moves and I used it.”
But the twist? Leclerc was doing the same.
“I realized his moves were just too good,” Hamilton laughed. “We both ended up asking, ‘Wait… are we both cheating?’ And turns out, we were.”
The light-hearted story gave fans a glimpse into the fun side of their relationship — two fierce racers who can’t resist one-upping each other, even when it comes to chess.
