Hamilton Reflects on “Night and Day” Ferrari Experience After P5 Finish in Bahrain
Lewis Hamilton has described a significant shift in performance and feeling with his Ferrari SF-25, following a strong drive to fifth place at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, who joined Scuderia Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season, admitted he “learned a lot” over the weekend, particularly in terms of understanding how to extract maximum performance from his new machinery.
Hamilton’s fifth-place finish at the Bahrain International Circuit marked his best result on a Sunday so far this season. The race, which spanned 57 laps, offered a glimpse of potential after what has been a challenging adaptation period for the British driver in red.
Saturday’s qualifying session had painted a more difficult picture. Hamilton struggled to find the ideal setup for the SF-25 and ended the day in ninth place on the grid, a full seven positions behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who appeared more comfortable with the car throughout the weekend.
However, Hamilton’s fortunes changed considerably come race day. Describing the difference in performance between Saturday and Sunday as “night and day,” Hamilton explained that he and the team had made progress in understanding the car’s behavior under race conditions. This improved feeling allowed him to make gains through the field and finish in a respectable fifth place, bringing home valuable points for Ferrari.
“It was a much better day today,” Hamilton shared in a post-race interview. “Saturday was definitely a struggle, and I wasn’t feeling great in the car. But overnight we made some changes, and it really came alive today. It’s clear we still have a long way to go, but I’ve definitely learned a lot this weekend.”
The British driver emphasized that understanding the nuances of the Ferrari’s performance window is still a work in progress. Despite being one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, Hamilton admitted that switching to a completely different car philosophy has presented unique challenges. Adapting to the Ferrari’s handling characteristics, tire behavior, and aerodynamic balance has taken time, and while his Bahrain result won’t yet satisfy his winning instincts, it represented an important step forward.
“I’ve been working closely with the engineers to figure out where I can unlock more from the car. The potential is there—we just need to find the consistency and confidence to tap into it every session,” Hamilton said.
Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur praised Hamilton’s efforts, noting that the team continues to gain valuable data and feedback from both drivers. “Lewis is doing an excellent job settling in,” Vasseur commented. “The Bahrain race showed that when everything comes together, he can really deliver. We’ll keep pushing to make sure both he and Charles have the tools they need to fight at the front.”
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Hamilton remains optimistic but realistic about the work still to be done. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “There’s more to come, and I know that once we really get on top of this car, we’ll be able to fight even higher up the grid.”
Hamilton and Ferrari now shift focus to the upcoming races, hoping to build on the momentum gained in Bahrain as they chase greater success in the 2025 Formula 1 campaign.
