Lewis Hamilton Retirement Rumours Swirl After Rocky Start With Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari is off to a rocky start, and now questions are being raised about whether the seven-time world champion could be nearing the end of his illustrious Formula One career.

The 40-year-old driver made headlines in 2024 when he announced a surprise departure from Mercedes a team with which he won six of his seven world titles choosing to join Ferrari in what was seen as a bold new chapter in his F1 journey. Hamilton’s move was part of a long-term vision aimed at returning Ferrari to championship glory. However, just five races into the 2025 season, the dream has hit significant turbulence.

Hamilton currently sits seventh in the drivers’ standings, with no podium finishes in any main Grand Prix events so far this year. While he did manage to capture a victory in the sprint race leading up to the Chinese Grand Prix, his overall form has fallen short of expectations. Meanwhile, teammate Charles Leclerc has outperformed him consistently, currently holding a 16-point advantage in the standings.

The disappointing results have led former F1 driver and commentator Ralf Schumacher to suggest that Hamilton could call time on his F1 career sooner than fans had hoped.

“If it continues like this, there’s a real possibility Lewis might say: ‘I’ve had enough. I’ve achieved everything, I’m 40, I’m wealthy, and I want to enjoy life outside of racing,’” Schumacher commented during a recent interview. “Clearly, something isn’t clicking at the moment. Whether it’s the car, the team dynamic, or simply age catching up he’s just not in sync.”

Schumacher, the brother of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, added that while there’s still potential for Hamilton to rebound, the adjustment to Ferrari appears to be more challenging than anyone expected.

“This was always going to be a huge project, and both Ferrari and Hamilton knew that. But to see such a clear gap between him and Leclerc it’s surprising,” he said. “That said, his performance in China showed he still has the skill. When everything lines up when the car suits him, and the conditions are right—he can still deliver. So we shouldn’t count him out just yet.”

Many within the F1 community have expressed hope that Hamilton will find his rhythm as the season progresses, but others believe the pressure will only mount if the results continue to disappoint. With younger drivers rising through the ranks and Ferrari eager to return to its former dominance, Hamilton’s window to prove himself may be narrower than expected.

As the F1 season heads into a critical mid-point, all eyes will be on Hamilton to see whether he can silence the doubters or if the 2025 campaign could mark the final lap of one of Formula One’s most celebrated careers.
