In a dramatic turn of events, 18-year-old F2 driver Kimi Antonelli’s highly anticipated Formula 1 weekend debut ended prematurely with a major crash just 10 minutes into his first session at the Italian Grand Prix. The Italian teenager, considered one of the brightest prospects in motorsport and tipped as a possible future replacement for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, was given the opportunity to take the wheel of George Russell’s updated W15 Mercedes during the first free practice session (FP1) at Monza.
Expectations were high for Antonelli, who has been making waves in the F2 circuit and showing promise as a rising star within the Mercedes junior driver program. His debut was eagerly watched, with many anticipating his potential to one day step into Hamilton’s shoes, especially amidst ongoing rumors that the seven-time world champion could be on his way to Ferrari in the near future.

It’s unfortunate it ended the way it did, but he was on the limit, pushing the limit from lap one, and that’s always good to see,” Lord explained.
Lord went on to reiterate that while it was disappointing to see Antonelli’s debut cut short, the crash was a valuable lesson for the young driver, who is still in the early stages of his career. “It’s all part of the learning curve,” he added, stressing that these kinds of moments are crucial for a young racer’s growth and development.
Following the crash, Antonelli was taken to the medical center for precautionary checks, which is standard protocol after a high-speed incident. He was later released and returned to the Mercedes garage, where he was greeted with understanding and support from the team. Mercedes mechanics immediately set to work assessing the damage to the W15, hoping to have it repaired in time for the next practice session.
Antonelli’s crash at Monza may have been a setback, but it’s unlikely to dampen the enthusiasm surrounding his future.
