McLaren CEO Zak Brown Criticizes FIA Over Johnny Herbert’s Exit as F1 Steward

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has strongly criticized the FIA following its decision to remove Johnny Herbert from his role as a Formula 1 steward. The governing body announced that Herbert would step down in 2025 after a “mutual” agreement determined that his work as a steward was incompatible with his role as an F1 pundit.

Herbert, a former F1 driver and long-time commentator, has been a well-respected figure in the paddock, providing both race stewarding expertise and media analysis. However, the FIA’s decision has sparked controversy, with Brown voicing his discontent over what he sees as a failure in governance.

“The FIA needs to be transparent and consistent in its decision-making,” Brown stated. “Johnny has been a valued and knowledgeable presence in both the stewarding room and the media, and it’s disappointing to see him forced out in this manner. If the sport wants to maintain credibility, we need stewards with real experience and an unbiased approach.”

The FIA has defended its stance, suggesting that the dual role posed a potential conflict of interest, but many in the F1 community believe Herbert’s insight as both a former driver and analyst only strengthened his ability to officiate races fairly.

Herbert’s departure raises fresh concerns about the FIA’s stewarding process, which has often been criticized for inconsistencies in race decisions. With the 2025 season approaching, teams and drivers will be watching closely to see how the FIA handles future steward appointments.
