Is An Aggressive Move in the NFL Draft Necessary for the Dallas Cowboys Trade Up?
The Dallas Cowboys are experiencing a disappointing offseason according to Jerry Jones’ own standards. Despite proclaiming that the team was fully committed and determined to win a Super Bowl, they have spent the least amount of money in free agency compared to other teams, with only $11 million. This offseason has been characterized by significant departures in free agency, including key players like left tackle Tyron Smith, center Tyler Biadasz, and running back Tony Pollard, among others. The sole addition to the team has been veteran inside linebacker Eric Kendricks.
Despite criticisms of the Cowboys being frugal or hesitant, a recent mock draft from CBS Sports suggests otherwise. The mock trade with the Las Vegas Raiders sees the Cowboys moving up from the 24th to the 13th overall pick to select Penn State offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu. Rick Spielman comments on this move, stating that it addresses one of the team’s biggest needs with the selection of the second-best left tackle in the draft.
Prior to Fashanu, the only offensive tackle projected to be chosen was Notre Dame’s Joe Alt, who was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the 7th overall pick. Offensive tackle remains the predominant projection for the Cowboys’ first draft pick, with Fashanu being the anticipated choice by CBS Sports. Not only would this selection provide the Cowboys with a left tackle on an affordable rookie contract, but it would also allow them to retain Tyron Smith at left guard, where he earned second-team All-Pro honors last season.
With Fashanu on board, the Cowboys and Prescott would gain a blindside protector who did not concede a single sack in his three seasons at Penn State and who received a strong grade of 78.8 in his final season, according to Pro Football Focus.
