Encouraged to Go for a Brave Draft Move to Make “Offense Unstoppable,” Lions.
The Detroit Lions concluded the 2023 season ranking third in yards gained and fifth in points scored. Despite their strong offensive performance, some NFL draft analysts are predicting the team will target a skilled position player early in the 2024 NFL draft. On March 30, Christian Booher of SI.com’s All Lions proposed the intriguing scenario of the Lions executing a bold trade up the draft board to acquire Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.
Booher contended that adding Bowers to Detroit’s offense would make them virtually unstoppable. By incorporating Bowers, the Lions could deploy 12 personnel groupings without allowing opponents to predict their strategy. While the Lions have established themselves with a run-oriented approach featuring two potent running backs, Bowers’ prowess as a pass-catcher would compel defenses to remain vigilant against the pass.
According to Booher, Bowers excels as a route runner with exceptional catching abilities, coupled with impressive athleticism. Additionally, he would present matchup difficulties alongside Sam LaPorta. Should defenses focus on stopping the run, either Bowers or LaPorta would exploit favorable matchups against linebackers or smaller defensive backs.
Bowers is widely recognized as one of the premier prospects in the 2024 draft class, with ESPN, Pro Football Focus, and Bleacher Report all ranking him among the top 10 prospects overall.
Booher’s analysis suggests that the Lions’ offense could ascend to new heights with Bowers’ arrival, as both he and LaPorta possess the versatility to contribute as both run blockers and pass catchers. Such a dynamic offense would confound opposing defenses, making it challenging for them to anticipate whether the Lions intend to run or pass.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com described Bowers as a prolific pass-catching tight end with exceptional acceleration, speed, body control, and hands. While he is capable as a move blocker, Zierlein noted that this aspect of his game may require further development compared to players like George Kittle. Despite potential adjustments to the speed and physicality of the NFL, Bowers is viewed as a player with the potential to become highly productive at the professional level, with the possibility of reaching Pro Bowl status.
