The Tigers defeat the White Sox 7–6 thanks to an RBI single by Carson Kelly in the tenth inning.
Carson Kelly delivered a clutch RBI single in both the seventh and 10th innings, propelling the Detroit Tigers to a 7-6 comeback triumph over the White Sox led by Luis Robert Jr. on Saturday.
Mark Canha and Riley Greene blasted homers for the Tigers, who narrowly edged out Chicago 1-0 in the opening game on Thursday. Parker Meadows excelled from the leadoff position, reaching base three times and making a spectacular catch in center field to deny Martín Maldonado a home run.
In the 10th inning, with Canha placed on second base as per extra-inning rules, Kelly hit a ground ball up the middle against Deivi García (0-1), granting Detroit the decisive lead. Kelly had earlier driven in Canha with a crucial two-out single in the seventh inning to level the score at 6-6.
Shelby Miller (1-0) delivered two flawless innings on the mound to secure the victory.
Kelly expressed the team’s ambitions for postseason play, emphasizing the importance of winning close games like this one.
Luis Robert showcased his power with a pair of two-run homers, while Braden Shewmake also went deep for Chicago. Despite Robert’s offensive display, the White Sox offense struggled, managing only three singles in the opener.
Michael Soroka made his White Sox debut, pitching five innings and allowing four runs.
Robert’s towering homers gave Chicago an early lead, but Detroit fought back, with Canha and Greene providing key hits to fuel the comeback. A crucial double play in the bottom of the seventh inning, initiated by Eloy Jiménez’s ground ball, thwarted a potential White Sox rally.
Reflecting on his performance, Spencer Torkelson, who made a pivotal play at first base, highlighted the importance of anticipation and instinct in making defensive plays.
