Toto Wolff has expressed concerns regarding the challenges Mercedes faces in the final nine races of the season, warning that the struggles they encountered during the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort may indicate deeper issues within the team. The Mercedes boss hinted that the problems go beyond just a simple setup issue, suggesting that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell might continue to face difficulties in the remaining races of the season.
Before the summer break, Mercedes had been in strong form, with Hamilton securing victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, marking the team’s third win in four races. This solid run had positioned them as a formidable contender. However, the Dutch Grand Prix was a different story, with Mercedes trailing behind teams like McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari. Both Russell and Hamilton finished the race in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Even more concerning was Russell’s significant gap of over 44 seconds behind the race winner, Lando Norris, who delivered a dominant performance.
Wolff acknowledged that the weekend’s performance was alarming, noting that the issues experienced by the team in Zandvoort cannot be attributed solely to a setup mistake. He emphasized the need for a thorough analysis of the data to identify the root causes of their poor showing.
“I don’t want to jump to conclusions too quickly,” Wolff explained, reflecting on the team’s difficulties. “We’re going to look at it in the coming days, and hopefully try to find clues in the data. Was it the setup, was it the track, or was it something else? Did we put something on the car that didn’t help? We need to understand what went wrong.”
Wolff’s comments reveal his concern about the performance fluctuations Mercedes has experienced recently. He pointed out the stark contrast between their recent success, which included six consecutive podium finishes, and their underwhelming results in Zandvoort. “The swing in performance between P1, P2 and P7, P8 is significant. It’s not just a simple setup decision,” Wolff noted, suggesting that there could be multiple factors at play.
He further emphasized the unpredictability of the current car, likening it to a “surprise box.” Wolff acknowledged that while the team had been competitive just a few weeks ago, their recent performance showed a significant drop-off, leading him to believe that a major factor must have contributed to their poor results. “You can’t really end up with a result like this without any major factor playing into it,” he said.
This uncertainty is likely to be concerning for Hamilton, who has ambitions to add more victories to his tally before he departs for Ferrari. The Dutch Grand Prix weekend was particularly challenging for the seven-time world champion. However, Hamilton found some solace in his performance on race day, as he managed to make progress despite starting further back on the grid.
Reflecting on his performance, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1, “I was much happier today. I was moving forwards, progressing, and heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, I was just too far back. If I had qualified where George was, I think I would have finished at least there, if not further ahead.”
Wolff’s comments about the need for analysis and Hamilton’s cautious optimism highlight the uncertainty surrounding Mercedes’ prospects for the remainder of the season.
