COYOTES IN Ariza ARE SAID TO RELOCATE TO SALT LAKE CITY
The Arizona Coyotes are on the verge of resolving their arena dilemma, albeit with an outcome that may not sit well with hockey enthusiasts in the state. Numerous sources indicate that the Coyotes are likely to relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Ever since their lease with Glendale for the Desert Diamond Arena expired in 2022, the Coyotes have grappled with finding a new home. Their efforts to construct a new arena in Tempe fell through, leaving them without a viable option. This season, they resorted to playing at Arizona State University’s 5,000-seat Mullett Arena.
Reports suggest that the NHL has intervened, facilitating the sale of the Coyotes to Ryan and Ashley Smith, owners of the Utah Jazz. The Coyotes are expected to play at the Delta Centre, the Jazz’s home arena, starting next season. Players have reportedly been informed about the impending relocation.
According to ESPN, the current owner of the Coyotes, Alex Meruelo, would retain the team name and intellectual property as part of the agreement. He would also have the opportunity to revive the franchise as an expansion team within the next five years if he resolved the arena issue. However, starting an expansion team would entail a $1 billion fee, equivalent to the amount Meruelo will receive from the Smiths for the team.
