F1 star breaks rank with stern warning to Max Verstappen and says ‘you have to control yourself’

Fernando Alonso has recently voiced his opinion regarding Max Verstappen’s use of profanity, urging the Red Bull driver to “control himself” when expressing his frustrations. This statement follows Verstappen receiving a community service penalty for his blunt remark during a press conference in Singapore, where he described his car as “f***ed.” This incident has reignited discussions about the appropriateness of language used by drivers in public settings.

The situation escalated after FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem made a comparison between swearing in motorsports and the language often found in rap music, suggesting that drivers could face penalties for using inappropriate language. Verstappen’s comments were particularly notable because they came during a highly scrutinized press conference, which only intensified the reactions from fans and fellow drivers alike.

In contrast to Verstappen’s outspoken nature, several prominent figures in the Formula One community, including Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, rallied in support of the Dutch driver. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, criticized the FIA’s punishment as a “joke” and encouraged Verstappen not to engage with the governing body’s disciplinary measures. He emphasized that such penalties could potentially stifle genuine expression, which is an essential aspect of the sport.

Amidst this controversy, Alonso, who drives for Aston Martin, articulated his stance on the responsibility that comes with being a professional athlete. He emphasized that drivers, being role models for many fans, need to exhibit a level of decorum in their public interactions. “The fans give us a huge responsibility because we are role models for many people,” Alonso stated, highlighting the influence drivers have on their audience, particularly younger fans who look up to them.

He further explained that the nature of their profession inherently demands a certain level of self-control and professionalism. “When you want to say something that is not correct, you have to control yourself, put on the brakes, and be politically correct,” Alonso advised. His comments reflect a growing sentiment among some drivers who believe that maintaining a positive public image is crucial in the world of Formula One, where visibility and media scrutiny are omnipresent.

Verstappen, who is currently 27 years old, has been under significant scrutiny for his language not only during press events but also over team radio communications. His blunt remarks have drawn attention and criticism during races, such as his expletive-filled comments during the Hungarian Grand Prix. This incident has served as a reminder of the high expectations placed on athletes in the public eye. Alonso reiterated the importance of being mindful of the fans: “The fans give you so much love, motivation, but that comes with responsibility.”

As the Formula One season continues, the next major event is the United States Grand Prix in Texas, scheduled for October 20. In a notable twist, McLaren has recently surged to the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings, surpassing Red Bull, who have held a dominant position for much of the season. Meanwhile, Norris trails Verstappen in the driver standings, with a gap of 52 points, and only six races remaining in the season.

Alonso’s comments serve as a poignant reminder that the world of Formula One extends beyond the track. It is filled with fans who deeply engage with the sport and its athletes. As the lines between sports, entertainment, and public responsibility blur, the behavior of drivers like Verstappen is under a microscope, reflecting not only their character but also the values of the sport as a whole. The ongoing discourse about the language used by drivers may continue to evolve as the season progresses, highlighting the complex relationship between athletes and their fans. Ultimately, Alonso’s call for professionalism and self-restraint resonates with many in the racing community, who recognize the significant impact that drivers can have as public figures.
