F1’s heart breaks as Eddie Jordan passes away aged 76
Eddie Jordan, the former Formula One team owner and principal, has sadly passed away at the age of 76. His death marks a significant loss in the motorsport world, where he was widely respected for his remarkable contributions to the sport. Jordan was not only a team principal but also a colorful and influential figure who left a lasting legacy.
While newer generations of fans may know Jordan from his entertaining and insightful podcast, Formula For Success, which he co-hosted with former F1 driver David Coulthard, his impact on Formula One went far beyond his media presence. As a team owner and principal, he guided his team through many memorable moments, fostering the careers of numerous talented drivers, including those in junior motorsport categories. One of his most notable achievements was giving Michael Schumacher his debut in Formula One at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. Schumacher’s remarkable P7 qualification in his first race led to him being quickly signed by Benetton’s Flavio Briatore, marking the beginning of a legendary F1 career.
Jordan’s team, Jordan Grand Prix, made a significant mark in the 1990s, often punching above its weight and competing fiercely with powerhouses like McLaren, Ferrari, and Williams. Despite being a smaller team, Jordan secured some remarkable results, and their last Formula 1 win came in 2005. During this period, the team was known for its strong spirit, with Jordan showing a flair for nurturing talent and navigating the complex dynamics of the F1 world.
However, after enduring financial difficulties, Jordan’s team was sold to the Midland Group in 2005 and became MF1 Racing in 2006. The ownership changed hands again in 2007, when it was rebranded as Spyker F1, before finally being sold to a new consortium in 2009 and renamed Force India. In recent years, this team evolved into what is now known as Aston Martin in the current F1 era.
In addition to his role as a team owner, Eddie Jordan was also known for his candid and open approach to life. He shared his battle with cancer in a heartfelt episode of the Formula For Success podcast, urging listeners to take the necessary steps to check for the disease. His message emphasized the importance of early detection, highlighting that modern treatments offer hope to those fighting cancer.
Eddie Jordan’s passing leaves a void in the motorsport community. His larger-than-life personality, passion for racing, and unique approach to Formula One will be remembered fondly by fans, drivers, and everyone who had the privilege of working
with him.
