Ferrari F1 SF-25: a new 99 % concept, but what does the remaining 1 % stand

Scuderia Ferrari is preparing to reveal the SF-25, the Formula 1 single-seater that will represent the team for the 2025 season. The Maranello-based team has announced a radical shift in its approach, introducing a new concept that is 99% different from the previous SF-24. However, as confirmed by team principal Frederic Vasseur and insiders close to the project, there remains a connection to the SF-24, with the final 1% being a link to the previous car. This 1% connection is mostly attributed to certain key elements carried over from the SF-24, particularly in the car’s central airbox structure, a feature that has been part of Ferrari’s design since the F1-75 in 2022.

The SF-25 marks a significant evolution in Ferrari’s approach to Formula 1 design. Under the direction of Loïc Serra, who joined the team after his time with Mercedes, the SF-25 features a completely redesigned chassis. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a pull-rod suspension system at the front of the car, a concept inspired by Mercedes’ design. This innovation aims to enhance cornering performance, a critical aspect of the car’s handling capabilities.

Aerodynamically, the SF-25 represents a complete overhaul compared to its predecessor. One of the most visible changes is in the sidepod design. The new sidepods are more compact and are optimized to improve airflow management, which is essential for boosting the car’s overall performance. This aerodynamic redesign is aimed at narrowing the performance gap with competitors, particularly Red Bull, whose car design has been highly regarded for its exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. Despite the radical changes, the central part of the SF-25, particularly the triangular shape of the airbox, remains largely unchanged, preserving the essence of Ferrari’s signature design. This retained feature represents the last vestige of the SF-24 in the new SF-25, forming the link between the two generations.

Another important aspect of the SF-25 is its power unit and cooling system. Ferrari has opted to take a more conservative approach with its cooling strategy, choosing not to follow the radical cooling solutions seen in teams like Red Bull, which reconfigured its radiators in 2024. Instead, Ferrari has worked to optimize its existing cooling systems, making adjustments to the aerodynamic design of the car’s engine cover to improve heat flow. These changes are crucial for ensuring the engine operates efficiently throughout the race while maintaining optimal performance.

As Ferrari looks ahead to the 2026 regulations, the SF-25 is seen as a stepping stone towards the future. The 2025 car will serve as a launchpad for Ferrari’s ongoing development, aiming to meet the immediate challenges of the 2025 season while positioning the team for the regulatory changes in 2026. With a more efficient chassis, refined aerodynamics, and enhanced cooling systems, the SF-25 is expected to be a more competitive car. The Formula 1 world will be watching closely to see if Ferrari’s ambitious promises will materialize on the track when the SF-25 makes its debut on February 19, 2025.
