FIA Announce Late Flurry of Penalties as Miami Grand Prix Sprint Race Result Overturned

In a dramatic post-race twist, the FIA has issued a wave of late penalties following the Miami Grand Prix Sprint Race, reshuffling the final classification and leaving teams scrambling to adjust strategies for the main Grand Prix.

The flurry of rulings came hours after the checkered flag, as stewards reviewed multiple incidents involving track limits, unsafe releases, and impeding during overtakes. Among the most affected were Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, and Lando Norris, who were each handed time penalties that dropped them several positions in the final order.

In an official statement, the FIA said:
“Following post-race investigations into several incidents during the Sprint, time penalties have been applied to multiple drivers for breaches of the Sporting Regulations. These penalties have altered the final Sprint Race standings.”

Alonso, originally classified seventh, was hit with a 5-second penalty for exceeding track limits, pushing him outside the points. Norris, penalized for forcing another driver off-track, dropped from sixth to ninth. Ocon, found guilty of an unsafe pit release, received a 10-second penalty, removing him from the top ten entirely.

Revised Top 5 – Miami Sprint Race:

  1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
  2. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
  3. George Russell (Mercedes)
  4. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
  5. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)

The updates triggered heated responses from some teams, with McLaren and Aston Martin both questioning the timing and transparency of the decisions.

Christian Horner commented, “It’s frustrating when results shift hours later. Teams and fans deserve clarity much sooner.”

With tensions running high and the main Grand Prix still ahead, the reshuffled grid will add extra spice to Sunday’s race — and put even more pressure on drivers to stay clean and composed under Miami’s intense spotlight.
