FIA Announces New F1 Penalty Rules Ahead of Imola Grand Prix …read more
The FIA has introduced a series of updated penalty guidelines ahead of this weekend’s Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, aimed at bringing greater consistency and transparency to race stewarding decisions.
Key among the changes is a revised points-based system for driver infractions, which will now be more closely tied to the severity and potential danger of incidents. Minor infractions such as track limits violations will incur fewer license penalty points, while dangerous driving or repeat offenses will face stiffer penalties.
Additionally, time penalties will now follow a stricter scale, with a standardized framework to help reduce inconsistencies seen in recent races. The FIA has also clarified guidelines regarding racing incidents, particularly during lap one or in wet conditions, where stewards will apply greater discretion before issuing punishments.
In a statement, the FIA said, “These updates are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance fairness and maintain the integrity of competition. We have listened to teams, drivers, and fans and believe these measures will support more predictable and equitable officiating.”
The new rules will be in effect starting with the first practice session at Imola on Friday. Teams have been briefed and welcomed the FIA’s move toward more transparent governance.
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix marks a crucial stage in the 2025 season, and all eyes will be on how the revised rules impact the race weekend.
