FIA intervenes after F1 team suspected of illegal trick

 

Several Formula 1 teams are currently raising concerns with the FIA regarding suspicions that an unnamed competitor may be circumventing the parc ferme regulations. This situation, which has gained traction ahead of the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin, revolves around allegations that this specific team has been making alterations to its car’s ride height between the qualifying session and the race. Such modifications could provide a significant competitive advantage, which is why the FIA plans to address this issue promptly.

The core of the suspicion lies in the technical regulations that govern the sport. Under these regulations, particularly Article 40.2 and Article 40.9, teams are prohibited from making aerodynamic adjustments to their cars once they enter parc ferme conditions. The rules explicitly allow only for the adjustment of the front wing’s aerodynamic setup using existing components, with no additions, removals, or replacements permitted. Furthermore, the regulations stipulate that any changes must be easily detectable during physical checks and cannot be executed without the use of tools.

Reports suggest that the team in question has been manipulating the clearance of the car’s front bib, often referred to as the T-tray. This component plays a crucial role in the vehicle’s aerodynamics, and even minor adjustments can yield significant performance benefits. By fine-tuning the ride height, the team could optimize its setup for the unique demands of qualifying and race conditions. In qualifying, a lower ride height might enhance aerodynamic efficiency and grip, allowing for faster lap times during low-fuel runs.
