Guenther Steiner exclusive: The truth behind Daniel Ricciardo’s Haas talks

Guenther Steiner, the team principal of Haas F1, recently discussed the team’s considerations regarding Daniel Ricciardo’s potential signing following his exit from McLaren. Contrary to speculation, Steiner clarified that Haas never actively pursued Ricciardo, even though there was an open seat available alongside Kevin Magnussen after Mick Schumacher’s departure.

Steiner admitted to having conversations with Ricciardo but expressed doubts about whether the Australian was ready to return to racing. He noted a lack of enthusiasm, describing it as a “spark” that seemed absent from Ricciardo’s demeanor. This hesitation stemmed from concerns that Ricciardo might not be fully prepared for the pressures of Formula 1, particularly after his tumultuous period at McLaren.

The team principal pointed out that although Ricciardo is undoubtedly talented, his recent struggles seemed to be more about mental and emotional challenges rather than a decline in skill. Steiner reflected on Ricciardo’s difficult journey since leaving Renault, suggesting that the intense pressures and expectations in F1 had taken a toll on him. He emphasized that the situation was compounded by Ricciardo’s transition to McLaren, where he faced challenges with his teammate, Lando Norris. Norris consistently outperformed Ricciardo, which may have further impacted Ricciardo’s confidence and mental state.

Steiner also noted that Ricciardo’s quick return to F1 after leaving McLaren might not have been ideal.
