Horner Provides Major Update on Potential Carlos Sainz-Red Bull Transfer
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has addressed speculation about a potential move for Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to Red Bull, amid ongoing rumors of driver market shake-ups for the 2025 Formula 1 season. While Sainz has reportedly attracted interest from several teams due to his strong performances and strategic prowess, Horner was quick to provide clarity on Red Bull’s current plans.
Speaking during a press conference ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix, Horner praised Sainz as a “remarkably talented driver” but dismissed immediate prospects of signing the Spaniard. “Carlos is an exceptional driver, and it’s no surprise that his name comes up when discussing the top talents in the sport,” Horner stated. “However, we are very happy with our current lineup, and our focus remains on the long-term growth of our team.”
Red Bull’s current lineup consists of two-time world champion Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez. While Verstappen has cemented his status as the team’s cornerstone, Pérez’s future has been subject to increasing scrutiny following inconsistent performances this season. Speculation has grown that Red Bull may look for alternatives, potentially opening the door for a driver like Sainz, whose contract with Ferrari expires at the end of 2024.
Horner also emphasized Red Bull’s focus on nurturing talent through its junior program. Rising stars such as Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, both currently associated with Red Bull’s sister team AlphaTauri, are considered strong candidates for promotion should a seat become available. “We have incredible talent within the Red Bull system,” Horner noted. “Our priority is always to develop and promote from within whenever possible.”
Carlos Sainz, who joined Ferrari in 2021, has been instrumental in elevating the Scuderia’s competitiveness alongside teammate Charles Leclerc. Recent reports suggest Sainz is seeking assurances about Ferrari’s future direction before committing to an extension. These circumstances have fueled speculation about a potential move, with Sainz himself neither confirming nor denying discussions with other teams.
While Horner’s comments appear to rule out an imminent deal, the dynamic nature of Formula 1’s driver market leaves room for surprises. Should Sainz remain available after 2024, and if Red Bull faces changes within its roster, the Spaniard could become a more realistic option.
For now, Red Bull seems intent on focusing on its dominant form and securing a future built around Verstappen. However, Horner’s diplomatic response ensures the door isn’t completely closed for a driver of Sainz’s caliber. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely as the driver market evolves over the coming months.
