Kimi Antonelli Shocks F1 World with Record-Breaking Sprint Pole at Miami Grand Prix

The Formula 1 paddock was left stunned as 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli delivered a sensational performance to snatch pole position for the Sprint Race at the Miami Grand Prix — setting a new circuit record in the process and marking a historic milestone in his rookie season.

The Mercedes junior, competing in only his third F1 weekend, lit up the track in the final minutes of Sprint Qualifying, clocking a blistering 1:26.372 lap time that left veterans like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Charles Leclerc trailing in disbelief.

“I just gave it everything,” Antonelli said after stepping out of the car, barely able to contain his emotions. “The grip was amazing, and the car just came alive. I didn’t expect this — not this early in the season, and definitely not in Miami.”

The result makes Antonelli the youngest driver in F1 history to secure a Sprint pole position, smashing a record previously held by Lando Norris. His lap time also set a new benchmark for the Miami street circuit, highlighting just how quickly he’s adapted to the elite level.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff hailed the result as “unbelievable,” adding, “We knew Kimi had talent — that’s why he’s here — but this level of composure and raw speed under pressure is extraordinary.”

The unexpected pole has shaken up the grid for Saturday’s Sprint Race, with championship contenders now forced to battle from behind Antonelli on a circuit known for limited overtaking.

Pundits and fans alike have begun to wonder whether Antonelli could become a serious contender much earlier than expected, as whispers of a new F1 superstar begin to grow louder.

With the spotlight firmly on him heading into the weekend, Antonelli’s breakthrough moment has added a thrilling twist to an already unpredictable Miami Grand Prix.
