McLaren’s 2025 F1 car breaks cover as Lando Norris showcases bold new design

McLaren has unveiled its new contender for the 2025 Formula 1 season, with Lando Norris taking the MCL39 out for its first track outing during a filming day at Silverstone. This marks the Woking-based team’s official reveal of their latest challenger, making McLaren the first F1 squad to showcase their new car. The MCL39 was presented in a camouflaged livery, a one-off design for the filming session. This launch comes ahead of other teams, with Williams set to reveal their 2025 car on Friday, and Haas scheduled for their own reveal on Sunday.

Both McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, had the opportunity to drive the MCL39 at Silverstone, donning black and grey race suits highlighted with vibrant orange accents. Although the MCL39 on track was McLaren’s actual car for the upcoming season, the camouflage livery was a temporary design and will not be the final look. The team will officially unveil the true paint scheme at the F1 75 Live event in London, scheduled for Tuesday, where all ten teams will reveal their cars.

Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, and CEO Zak Brown have both expressed anticipation for the season ahead. Brown emphasized that while McLaren’s new challenger has been developed with great effort, they must remain cautious as every other team is expected to make progress over the winter break. McLaren’s impressive performance in 2024, when they secured the Constructors’ Championship title, has raised expectations for the new season, and they are aiming to defend their title. However, Brown acknowledged that the competition would be tough, particularly from teams like Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes, with Ferrari’s new signing of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton making them an even more formidable opponent in 2025.

Zak Brown also shared his thoughts on McLaren’s development, noting that the MCL39 represents another step forward from their championship-winning MCL38. While McLaren is confident that they have made progress during the offseason, they are not rushing to make predictions about their position relative to their rivals. Brown cautioned that the true standing of the teams won’t be revealed until the first qualifying session in Melbourne. Nonetheless, he emphasized that McLaren is a team that is always committed to pushing forward and will give everything to secure both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

With the grid in F1 becoming increasingly competitive, McLaren’s ambition for 2025 remains high. They are set to challenge not only for the Constructors’ Championship but also to support their drivers in battling the stars of Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes for the individual Drivers’ Championship
