George Russell, a prominent driver for Mercedes, has made a surprising statement regarding his best race performance of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Despite securing two race victories—one in Austria and another in Las Vegas—Russell’s most memorable drive of the year came at the Belgian Grand Prix. However, his exceptional performance in Spa ended in controversy as he was disqualified after the race for his car being underweight. As a result, Russell lost what would have been his third win of the season, and his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, inherited the victory, having finished second.
Russell’s disqualification was a huge setback, especially given how hard he fought during the race. Despite this, the British driver has openly admitted that the Belgian GP was his most impressive drive of the season, even above his flawless victory in Las Vegas. In an interview with Motorsport.com, Russell explained why the Spa race stood out for him. He described the Belgian GP as “definitely the best drive without doubt,” citing the intense challenge of the race. Unlike his dominant win in Las Vegas, where the early stages were his toughest and the rest of the race was about managing the car to the finish, Spa was a more strategic and combative race. Russell explained that the race at Spa involved a great deal of uncertainty and tactical decision-making, especially in the closing laps.
He recalled how crucial it was to maintain focus and avoid mistakes in the final stages of the race. The strategy, particularly during the last few laps, was a “roll of the dice,” with Russell having to manage his position under intense pressure. He emphasized that the battle in Belgium required him to push relentlessly without the luxury of a comfortable lead, making it one of the most thrilling and demanding races of his career.
Despite losing the win in Belgium, Russell’s appreciation for the drive reflects his competitive spirit and the satisfaction he derived from the challenge, even if the final result was not in his favor. His ability to remain focused and push through the pressure speaks to his maturity as a driver, and while the disqualification was a tough blow, the experience in Belgium is one he holds dear.
