Lando Norris has revealed that he previously considered leaving McLaren, sharing insights into past opportunities to join rival Formula 1 teams. As he enters the 2025 season, the 25-year-old reflects on his loyalty to McLaren, a decision that has now paid off with four race wins, 26 podiums, and a constructors’ championship for the Woking-based team.
After a winless start to his F1 career, Norris celebrated his fourth victory at the 2024 season finale in Abu Dhabi, securing McLaren’s first constructors’ title since 1998. The title battle was intense, with McLaren and Ferrari entering the final race neck-and-neck in the standings. Despite both Ferrari drivers finishing on the podium, Norris’ victory proved decisive. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, also played a crucial role, fighting back from an early crash to finish in the points.
The 2024 season saw McLaren emerge as Red Bull’s closest challenger, with Ferrari also showing moments of brilliance. Red Bull, however, faltered due to Sergio Perez’s underwhelming performances, leaving the team out of contention for the constructors’ title. The fierce rivalry between McLaren and Ferrari ultimately culminated in McLaren’s triumph.
Reflecting on the achievement, Norris expressed his pride in staying loyal to McLaren despite receiving offers from other teams earlier in his career. These opportunities came during challenging periods when McLaren was far from competing at the front of the grid. “I think the thing I’ll be proudest and happiest about is the fact I’m still here,” Norris said. “The fact I’m still in papaya because I believed in the team for many years.”
The British driver acknowledged that he had chances to move to race-winning teams, which could have accelerated his success. “I had opportunities to not be in papaya and to maybe go on and win races at an earlier stage in my career,” Norris admitted. “But I believed and I wanted to simply do it with McLaren. I wanted to do it with the guys who gave me my opportunity in Formula 1.”
Norris also highlighted how McLaren exceeded their expectations for 2024. “We didn’t think it was going to be possible this year. We were hoping for next year; that was our on-paper target,” he explained. “The fact we’re doing it this year is an even bigger achievement.”
The constructors’ championship victory marks a turning point for McLaren, signaling their return to the top of the sport after decades of struggle. For Norris, the win is a testament to the team’s collective effort and his faith in their long-term vision. As he looks ahead to the 2025 season, the British star remains committed to building on this success and solidifying McLaren’s position at the forefront of Formula 1.
