Racing Legend and F1 Dad Poised to Shake Up FIA as He Eyes Shocking Presidential…read more

Carlos Sainz Sr., a motorsport icon and father of Formula 1 star Carlos Sainz Jr., is reportedly preparing to launch an unexpected bid for the presidency of the FIA, the global governing body for motorsport. The two-time World Rally Champion is being quietly backed by influential figures across the racing world, with insiders suggesting he may challenge current FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the high-stakes December 2025 election.

At 63, Sainz Sr. brings decades of competitive experience and a reputation for integrity, potentially making him a formidable alternative to Ben Sulayem, whose leadership has faced mounting criticism. The recent resignation of FIA deputy president for sport Robert Reid has further spotlighted internal discontent, fueling speculation that a leadership change may be imminent.

Despite his son’s active role in Formula 1 with Ferrari, sources say any potential conflict of interest is being carefully considered. Should Sainz Sr. move forward with his candidacy, he is expected to recuse himself from decisions directly affecting F1 to preserve fairness and transparency.

The move comes as F1 drivers continue to demand a stronger voice in the sport’s governance. Lewis Hamilton recently called for the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) to have more influence, saying that drivers are “often left out of key decisions.” Sainz Sr., respected by drivers and team principals alike, is seen as someone who could bridge the gap between racers and regulators.

While he has yet to officially declare his candidacy, the prospect of Carlos Sainz Sr. entering the race has already ignited discussion throughout the motorsport world. If he runs, it could mark the beginning of a transformative era for the FIA—and motorsport as a whole.
