Dr. Helmut Marko, senior advisor and consultant at Red Bull, has praised Max Verstappen’s exceptional driving skills, stating that he “saved” the team despite having a car that was not the fastest on the grid. Verstappen secured his fourth World Drivers’ Championship earlier this year, and Marko attributed his success to his ability to overcome the car’s weaknesses.
In an interview with Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung, Marko reflected on the team’s performance in the 2024 season, citing the technical problems they faced and the times when they only had the fourth-fastest car. However, he credited Verstappen’s incredible driving skills, particularly in the rain-soaked Brazilian Grand Prix, where he started from P17 and climbed his way to victory.
Marko stated, “It was a very difficult year for us, especially with our technical problems. At some point, we no longer knew where we had taken a wrong turn, and at times, we only had the fourth-fastest car. In this situation, Max saved us by getting around the car’s weaknesses.”
The Brazilian Grand Prix was a turning point in the season, with Verstappen’s victory marking one of his nine wins in the 2024 season. Despite his individual success, Red Bull Racing finished third in the constructors’ championship, behind Ferrari and McLaren.
