Ralf Schumacher Expresses Concern Over Lewis Hamilton’s Future in Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season generated excitement among fans, but the early stages of the partnership have proven to be challenging. Now, former F1 driver turned analyst Ralf Schumacher has voiced concerns that the seven-time world champion may not see out the full length of his contract with the iconic Italian team.
Hamilton, who left Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season, has struggled to adapt to his new environment. Despite high expectations, his performance with Ferrari has so far fallen short. While he managed to secure a victory in the sprint race in China, that success has been the exception rather than the norm. As of now, Hamilton finds himself in seventh place in the drivers’ standings, trailing behind both Mercedes drivers as well as his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc.
Speaking to Sport1 in the lead-up to the Miami Grand Prix, Schumacher shared his observations, noting that Hamilton’s demeanor suggests frustration and confusion. “Lewis seems perplexed and desperate, both in what he says and in his body language,” Schumacher said. “I know from personal experience as a former driver that there comes a point when you wake up one morning and realize it’s time to stop. You feel like you’re no longer adding value and don’t want to become an obstacle to your team.”
Schumacher, who raced in Formula 1 for teams like Williams and Toyota, reflected on the mental and emotional toll that such a scenario can have on a driver. He added that while he hopes Hamilton can bounce back and find his rhythm, he fears that retirement could come earlier than expected.
Hamilton, now 40 years old, signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari that was expected to see him through the next phase of his illustrious career. However, the lack of competitive results and his visible frustration have sparked debates about how long he might choose to remain on the grid if the situation doesn’t improve.
Helmut Marko, Red Bull Racing’s advisor and known for his candid takes on driver performances, also commented on Hamilton’s current form. According to Marko, the British driver does appear to be in a difficult mental state. However, he believes Hamilton still holds out hope for a resurgence in the near future.
“He does indeed seem desperate,” said Marko. “But I think he is looking ahead to the 2026 season. That’s when the new generation of cars comes in. He’s probably hoping that Ferrari can deliver a winning machine by then—one that not only suits his driving style but can genuinely challenge for championships.”
For now, Hamilton remains committed to turning things around. The Formula 1 world will be watching closely to see whether this challenging chapter is just a temporary dip or the beginning of the end for one of the sport’s most successful drivers. Either way, the spotlight remains firmly on him as the 2025 season unfolds.
