Despite showing promise when stepping in for Ricciardo in 2023, Lawson struggled in the opening two races of 2025, failing to score points in Australia and China. As a result, he has been sent back to Racing Bulls, while Yuki Tsunoda has been promoted to partner l Max Verstappen making him Verstappen’s sixth teammate in nine years.
The team officially announced the switch on Thursday, just ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix on April 6, but rumors had been circulating since the Shanghai GP, making the decision one of F1’s worst-kept secrets.
Social Media Erupts With Ricciardo Support
As soon as news of Lawson’s demotion broke, fans flooded TikTok and other platforms, demanding Ricciardo’s return.
One fan wrote: “Bring Daniel Ricciardo back.”
Another insisted: “He’s the only one who can drive Max’s car properly.”
A third referenced Ricciardo’s nickname, saying: “Please give the Honey Badger another chance.”
Many also criticized Red Bull for dropping Ricciardo last season, pointing out the irony of Lawson suffering a similar fate.
One user argued that Red Bull’s struggles could have been avoided: “If they never kicked out Danny, Red Bull would have always won the championship.”
