Red Bull Could Suffer Major Decline if Verstappen Departs, Warns Karun Chandhok
Former F1 driver and current analyst Karun Chandhok has cautioned that Red Bull Racing could face a dramatic downturn similar to the decline experienced by Benetton in the 1990s if Max Verstappen chooses to leave the team.
Chandhok believes Red Bull’s recent dominance in Formula 1 is too heavily built around Verstappen, warning that his departure could leave a major void.
“Red Bull has built a brilliant operation, but much of their recent success depends on Max,” Chandhok explained. “If he walks away, they could suffer the same kind of downfall Benetton experienced after Michael Schumacher left.”
Benetton, once a title-winning team, faded from the spotlight after Schumacher’s move to Ferrari, a fate Chandhok fears could repeat for Red Bull.
Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull through 2028, but ongoing internal tensions and persistent rumors have fueled speculation about a possible switch — with Mercedes often mentioned as a potential destination.
Although Red Bull still boasts a strong technical foundation, Chandhok emphasized that Verstappen’s talent has been a key factor in turning that potential into results.
“You can have a fast car, but it takes an elite driver to consistently deliver victories,” Chandhok said. “Right now, that’s Max. Losing him would be a huge blow.”
Red Bull has not made any public comment on Chandhok’s statements but continues to express confidence in keeping Verstappen as the centerpiece of their championship efforts.
