Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has hinted at a possible return to Red Bull Racing—this time not behind the wheel, but in a leadership role. The German confirmed that discussions have taken place regarding him stepping into the shoes of long-time motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, though he stressed that talks remain at an early stage.

Vettel, who won all four of his F1 titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, left the team for Ferrari in 2014 and retired from the sport at the end of the 2022 season. Despite stepping away from the F1 spotlight, he has maintained a close relationship with Red Bull and Marko.

“I still get along very well with Helmut and we are also in talks,” Vettel told Austrian broadcaster ORF. “In terms of the subject—not so intensive and not so deep yet—but that is perhaps something that could play a role. It remains to be seen in what form.”

Helmut Marko, who has served as Red Bull’s motorsport advisor since the team’s F1 debut in 2005, has recently suggested he may soon step down. While no official timeline has been confirmed, speculation over his replacement has grown—and Vettel is seen by many as a natural fit.

Vettel was quick to temper expectations, acknowledging Marko’s irreplaceable presence at Red Bull. “Marko is not replaceable, let’s put it that way,” he said. “He is a character and has made a huge contribution to the team’s successes since 2005.”

Despite modesty about his current knowledge of the role, Vettel said he believes he understands the demands and expectations: “I think I know the position very well from my days. But to be honest, I have to admit that I haven’t walked around Helmut that closely in recent years. However, I think I do know what he does.”

For now, Vettel appears in no rush, keeping his future open while staying closely connected to the team that defined the peak of his career.
