Sergio Perez’s tenure with Red Bull Racing has come under scrutiny, with parallels being drawn to Daniel Ricciardo’s recent dismissal. The Australian driver was released from his role with VCARB following the Singapore Grand Prix after finishing a disappointing 18th. Talks of Ricciardo’s exit reportedly began as early as the Spanish Grand Prix, but Red Bull hesitated to make the decision final until later in the season. Ultimately, Ricciardo was replaced by junior driver Liam Lawson, who has since impressed by securing points finishes in two of his last three races.
Now, speculation has turned to Perez, whose future with Red Bull appears increasingly uncertain. Like Ricciardo, Perez has faced mounting pressure to deliver results but has struggled to meet expectations. The Mexican driver has not achieved a podium finish since the Chinese Grand Prix, and his lackluster performances have had a direct impact on the team’s standing. Ferrari has overtaken Red Bull for second place in the Constructors’ Championship, adding to the scrutiny surrounding Perez’s position.
Red Bull opted to retain Perez through the summer break, but his recent form has reignited discussions about his future. Despite this, former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has suggested that Perez may still remain with the team in 2025, citing financial considerations as a key factor. Speaking to W Radio Colombia, Montoya explained: “Checo insists he will continue, and I also believe he will stay on the grid next year. They may want him out, but I don’t think he will simply walk away.”
Montoya highlighted a critical distinction between Perez and Ricciardo’s situations: the financial backing Perez brings to the team. “Checo brings money, and that makes a difference,” Montoya noted. However, he acknowledged the immense pressure Perez is under. “He’s being pushed to the limit. It’s not an easy position for him, and I think many people want him out. Whether he deserves it or not is debatable because we don’t know what happens behind the scenes, but there’s clearly interest in putting another driver in that car.”
While Perez’s future with Red Bull remains uncertain, the situation underscores the intense pressure faced by drivers at the sport’s elite level, where results often dictate longevity. With the 2024 season looming, Perez will need a significant turnaround to secure his place with the team.
