Seven-Time MotoGP Champion Marc Márquez Undergoes Shoulder Surgery After Indonesian GP Crash

Seven-time MotoGP world champion Marc Márquez has successfully undergone surgery following an injury sustained during the Indonesian Grand Prix, where he was involved in a crash that forced him to retire early from the race.

Márquez, who has already sealed the 2025 MotoGP world title with four races still remaining, was caught up in a first-lap collision with Marco Bezzecchi, resulting in a painful shoulder injury. The incident occurred shortly after the start when Bezzecchi, who had begun the race from pole position, dropped several places to seventh, finding himself directly behind Márquez.

As Bezzecchi attempted to regain positions, he made contact with the rear of Márquez’s Ducati, sending both riders sliding into the gravel trap. While Bezzecchi was able to walk away, Márquez was later seen leaving the circuit with his arm in a sling, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the injury.

Medical examinations conducted in the days following the crash revealed that Márquez had suffered a coracoid fracture — a break in a small bone located in the shoulder blade — along with ligament damage in his right shoulder. Despite taking a week off to rest and recover, his condition did not improve as expected, prompting doctors to recommend surgery.

On Wednesday, Ducati released an official statement confirming that Márquez had undergone a successful operation at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, Spain. The statement added that the procedure went smoothly and that Márquez has already been discharged to continue his recovery at home.

“Marc Márquez underwent surgery for a coracoid fracture and ligament damage in his right shoulder. The procedure was successful, and he is now resting at home. His recovery will be monitored closely in the coming weeks to determine when he will be able to return to racing,” the team announced.

As a result of the injury and operation, Márquez has been ruled out of next weekend’s Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. However, since he has already clinched the world championship title for this season, his absence will not affect his standings.

To fill the gap, Ducati has confirmed that test rider Michele Pirro will step in for Márquez at the Australian round. Pirro has previously raced as a substitute rider for Ducati on multiple occasions and is expected to help maintain the team’s strong momentum.

Ducati has enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2025, winning all but two races and securing both the constructors’ and riders’ championships well before the season finale. Márquez’s consistency and dominance have been key to the team’s success, marking his first title with Ducati since joining the Italian outfit.

Despite the setback, Márquez remained positive and reached out to his fans through an Instagram post, expressing gratitude for their concern and support. “Surgery done, everything went well. Thanks for all your messages and support! Recovery mode on!” he wrote, alongside a photo of himself recovering post-surgery.

While no official return date has been announced, the timing of Márquez’s recovery will depend on how his shoulder responds in the coming weeks. Ducati and his medical team will continue to assess his progress before deciding whether he will return for the remaining races of the season.
