Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has spoken candidly about the challenges surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s departure and how the team has moved forward with its 2025 driver selection.
Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 world champion, sent shockwaves through the sport last season when he announced his decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025. “We had to deal with a difficult situation when Lewis decided to leave,” Wolff said. “But then you bring in Kimi, a massive talent, and it creates an almost perfect combination. I don’t expect one driver to dominate the other.”
Antonelli, who impressed in Formula 2 during the 2024 season, has made a strong start to his rookie year in F1. His performances in the opening races of 2025 have validated Mercedes’ decision, with the young driver securing a fourth-place finish in Australia and sixth in China, accumulating 18 points. Meanwhile, his teammate George Russell has delivered consistent podium finishes, securing third place in both races.
