Toto Wolff Addresses ‘Difficult’ Lewis Hamilton Exit and Backs 2025 Driver Line-Up

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has spoken candidly about the challenges surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s departure and how the team has moved forward with its 2025 driver selection.

Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 world champion, sent shockwaves through the sport last season when he announced his decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025. His exit sparked intense speculation about who would fill his seat, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen frequently linked to a high-profile switch. However, instead of pursuing an established star, Mercedes opted to promote 18-year-old Italian driver Kimi Antonelli, a decision that initially raised eyebrows given his limited experience.

Despite concerns over Antonelli’s inexperience, Wolff remains confident in the team’s new pairing, believing they have the right balance to succeed. Speaking to The Times, Wolff expressed his satisfaction with the choice and emphasized that Mercedes was never in doubt about how to handle Hamilton’s departure.

“We had to deal with a difficult situation when Lewis decided to leave,” Wolff said. “But then you bring in Kimi, a massive talent, and it creates an almost perfect combination. I don’t expect one driver to dominate the other.”

Antonelli, who impressed in Formula 2 during the 2024 season, has made a strong start to his rookie year in F1. His performances in the opening races of 2025 have validated Mercedes’ decision, with the young driver securing a fourth-place finish in Australia and sixth in China, accumulating 18 points. Meanwhile, his teammate George Russell has delivered consistent podium finishes, securing third place in both races.

Mercedes’ strong start to the season has positioned them as unexpected contenders in the constructors’ championship, a turnaround from their struggles in previous years. With both Antonelli and Russell showing promise, the team remains optimistic about their chances against front-runners like Red Bull and Ferrari.

Although Hamilton’s departure marked the end of an era for Mercedes, Wolff’s confidence in the new driver lineup suggests the team is fully prepared to move forward. Antonelli’s rapid adaptation to F1 and Russell’s consistency could make them a formidable pairing in the seasons ahead.
