Toto Wolff Worried About Christian Horner Landing a Role at the FIA
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has raised eyebrows after suggesting that Christian Horner—Red Bull’s recently ousted team principal—might make a dramatic return to Formula 1, but this time on the regulatory side with the FIA.
Speaking at the Belgian Grand Prix, Wolff didn’t hold back. “He’s controversial, polarizing… not exactly soft-washed,” he said. “But I like that about him—it’s part of the entertainment.” Still, Wolff admitted there’s one scenario he’s not so thrilled about: Horner joining the FIA. “I need to be careful what I say—he might show up in the FIA, and then I’m really in trouble,” he joked.
The joke comes with a serious undertone. Horner was removed from Red Bull earlier this month after more than 20 years in charge, during which the team became one of F1’s dominant forces. Since his departure, the shake-up has been massive. Star designer Adrian Newey is gone. Sporting director Jonathan Wheatley followed. And now, former Ferrari man Laurent Mekies is stepping into the hot seat.
Wolff’s concerns about Horner aren’t just about past rivalries. He pointed out how the controversy surrounding Horner—especially the internal investigation into alleged inappropriate behavior last year, which Horner was cleared of—created a cloud over the sport. Wolff, along with McLaren’s Zak Brown, had pushed for more transparency from both F1 and the FIA.
“We all have a responsibility to uphold the values of the sport,” Wolff said at the time. “That includes being role models.”
Now, with Horner potentially eyeing a spot on the sport’s governing body, Wolff isn’t entirely comfortable. While he acknowledges Horner’s talent and charisma, the idea of him returning as a rule-maker clearly makes the Mercedes boss uneasy.
