Tragedy Hits F1 Star Alonso Following Death of Long-Time Physiotherapist Fabrizio Borra

Formula 1 icon Fernando Alonso is mourning the devastating loss of Fabrizio Borra, his long-time physiotherapist and close personal friend, who passed away on Sunday morning in Forlì, Italy, at the age of 64. Borra had been privately battling cancer for the past year.

The news was first reported by Italian outlet Corriere della Sera, confirming Borra’s passing and acknowledging his immense contribution not only to motorsport, but to elite athletic performance across multiple disciplines. Widely regarded as one of the most influential physiotherapists in Formula 1 history, Borra had worked with Alonso since the Spaniard’s F1 debut with Minardi in 2001, remaining a loyal fixture through every stage of the two-time World Champion’s career.

Beyond his technical skills, Borra was viewed by Alonso as a mentor, confidant, and essential part of his professional journey. Their two-decade partnership endured through Alonso’s time at Renault—where he won his back-to-back World Championships in 2005 and 2006—McLaren, Ferrari, Alpine, and currently, Aston Martin.

In a heartfelt tribute posted on social media, Alonso wrote:
I’ll miss you, Fabri, every day. Thank you for teaching me so much and making me a better person and athlete. My whole career with you has been the greatest good fortune I could have. Rest in peace, brother.”

Borra’s reputation in the motorsport community extended well beyond Alonso. He famously aided Michael Schumacher’s recovery following the Ferrari legend’s leg-breaking crash at the 1999 British Grand Prix and supported other elite athletes such as MotoGP’s Andrea Dovizioso and cycling icon Marco Pantani. His clients also included celebrities and performing artists, with his holistic and individualized approach to physical well-being earning him acclaim in and out of sports.

Colleagues and athletes remember Borra as a pioneering figure who redefined physiotherapy in high-performance environments. His unique ability to blend physical science with an intuitive understanding of the human body made him an irreplaceable part of many careers.

Borra is survived by his wife Enia and sons Luca and Daniele, both of whom now work at the Fisiology Center he founded in Forlì. Italian singer Jovanotti, a longtime client and friend, was among the many public figures to express grief, calling Borra an “undisputed leader” in his field.

The news has sent ripples through the Formula 1 paddock, with teams and drivers offering condolences and reflecting on Borra’s enduring influence. As the F1 community prepares for the next Grand Prix, it does so with heavy hearts, honoring a man whose contributions extended far beyond the race track.

Fabrizio Borra’s legacy will live on not only in the athletes he helped shape, but in the countless lives he touched through his compassion, dedication, and excellence.
