Fred Vasseur has shed light on what sets Lewis Hamilton apart from other drivers in Formula 1, ahead of the British driver’s highly anticipated switch to Ferrari. The seven-time World Champion, who will turn 40 during the winter break, is preparing to begin a new chapter in his career next season, having spent over a decade with Mercedes.
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 community. The partnership, announced before the 2024 season begins, is becoming a reality as Hamilton enters his final six Grand Prix weekends with Mercedes. His time with the German team, which started in 2013, has been incredibly successful, seeing him win the majority of his World Championships and solidify his place in the sport’s history. Now, the question is what Hamilton will bring to Ferrari.
Speaking to The Times, Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur highlighted the key trait that separates Hamilton from most of the grid. “Lewis is a machine,” Vasseur said. He explained that Hamilton’s organization and methodical approach are what make him exceptional. “The main difference between Lewis and the majority of the grid… is that he is organised like a company. In his mind, in his approach, he knows what he wants to do, when he wants to do it. He’s able to separate every single pillar of the activity, and for us, for Ferrari, it will be helpful.”
Vasseur emphasized that Hamilton’s maturity and vast experience will help Ferrari improve, especially since the driver knows exactly how to demand high standards from the team. “It won’t change life internally, except that Lewis is coming with his own experience, his own maturity, and it will help the team to do a better job because he’s very exigent,” he added.
The Ferrari boss, who has known Hamilton since before his first World Championship, also acknowledged that their longstanding relationship will be beneficial as they embark on this new collaboration. He believes that this unique dynamic could help the team reach new heights.
Before Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, he aims to close out his career with Mercedes on a high note, starting with the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin. His current team boss, Toto Wolff, is eager to provide Hamilton with the best possible send-off, honoring the many successful years they have had together.
