Verstappen confirms SHOCK talks over Mercedes move
Max Verstappen has revealed that he held discussions with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff about a potential move during the turbulent 2024 Formula 1 season.
Despite his ultimate loyalty to Red Bull, Verstappen confirmed that talks took place around the Miami Grand Prix, describing them as constructive and open.
Red Bull faced significant challenges both on and off the track in 2024.
Team principal Christian Horner was investigated for alleged inappropriate behavior, though an internal review cleared him of any wrongdoing.
The controversy, however, sparked internal tensions, with Verstappen’s father, Jos, publicly calling for Horner to step down.
Compounding these issues, key personnel Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley departed, leading to Red Bull falling behind McLaren and Ferrari in performance.
Despite these setbacks, Verstappen persevered and clinched the drivers’ championship, reaffirming his commitment to Red Bull.
He expressed gratitude for the sense of belonging he feels within the team, stating, “I just feel at home there.”
During Red Bull’s turmoil, Wolff made public overtures to Verstappen, fueling speculation about a potential move.
While Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull extends until 2028, he acknowledged the possibility of future changes, given his young age and the unpredictable nature of Formula 1.
Reflecting on the discussions with Wolff, Verstappen said, “You always talk to each other. I think it’s not a problem either. I think we’ve had very constructive conversations, but I’m also very loyal to my own team.”
Ultimately, Verstappen emphasized his satisfaction with his current situation and his focus on the present, while leaving the door open for potential shifts later in his career.
