Verstappen could ‘quit F1 FOREVER’ over…read more

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen is reportedly on the verge of a potential race ban following the accumulation of penalty points on his FIA Super Licence — and according to a former F1 driver, this situation could push Verstappen to quit the sport entirely.

The Dutchman, who recently clinched victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, received three penalty points during the event, which has significantly increased scrutiny over his on-track conduct. With these additions, Verstappen now finds himself just a single point away from a race suspension, as per the regulations set by the FIA. Under these rules, if a driver collects 12 penalty points within a 12-month period, they are automatically banned for one race.

This looming threat has sparked concern among fans and experts alike, with one ex-F1 star even suggesting that Verstappen may decide to walk away from Formula 1 permanently if he feels unfairly treated. Known for his strong opinions and uncompromising racing style, Verstappen has previously made it clear that he’s not afraid to step away from the sport if it stops being enjoyable or becomes overly regulated.

As things currently stand, Verstappen has 11 penalty points on his licence. However, two of those points are set to expire on June 30 — just after the Canadian Grand Prix and the subsequent Austrian Grand Prix. This means that if Verstappen can maintain a clean record through these two upcoming races, he will see his total drop back to nine points, providing a bit more breathing room and lowering the immediate risk of a suspension.

Despite this, the short-term pressure remains extremely high. Every incident on track over the next two races will be heavily scrutinized, and any infraction that results in just one more point could see the four-time world champion sitting out a Grand Prix. This could have massive implications for both the championship standings and Verstappen’s morale.

The potential for a ban has not only raised questions about Verstappen’s driving tactics but has also reignited debates about the consistency and fairness of the FIA’s penalty system. Critics argue that some of the points assessed against Verstappen were harsh or unnecessary, while others believe they are justified due to the aggressive nature of his racing.

Ultimately, while Verstappen remains committed for now, the mounting pressure and frustration over the penalty system could push him to reconsider his future in Formula 1. If he perceives that he’s being unfairly targeted or that the sport no longer aligns with his racing philosophy, the unthinkable — a permanent exit from F1 — might become a very real possibility.
