Max Verstappen has suffered a setback as Lando Norris claimed the top spot in the 2024 Formula 1 Power Rankings, narrowly edging out the Dutch driver. Verstappen secured his fourth world championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, after a challenging season filled with struggles, including a winless streak between the Spanish and Brazilian Grands Prix. Despite this, he triumphed in his championship battle with Norris, who was ultimately unable to capture his first-ever F1 drivers’ title.
While Norris fell short of the individual championship, his consistent performances throughout the season helped McLaren clinch the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since 1998. Norris’ impressive season culminated in a perfect score for his victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, propelling him to the top of the final 2024 Power Rankings.
The F1 Power Rankings are compiled after each Grand Prix by a panel of five judges who evaluate drivers based on their performances over the weekend, scoring them out of 10. The scores from all judges are then averaged to form the race score, and throughout the season, these scores are accumulated to generate the final Power Rankings leaderboard.
In the final rankings of 2024, Norris emerged as the leader with an average score of 8.2 across the season, narrowly beating Verstappen, who finished second with an average of 8.1. Charles Leclerc secured third place with a 7.8 average, as a few unexpected results during the season impacted his position.
In the latter stages of the rankings, a notable tie occurred between Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly, both of whom held an average score of 7, landing them in joint eighth position. Notably, established names like Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso did not make the top ten in the final rankings.
This result highlights Norris’ exceptional consistency and growth throughout the 2024 season, marking a shift in the competitive landscape of Formula 1. Even though Verstappen claimed the world title, Norris’ overall season performances and victories earned him the top spot in the Power Rankings, cementing his place as one of the season’s standout drivers.
