The Spanish Grand Prix is under scrutiny as climate activists and local residents prepare to protest against the Formula 1 roadshow in Barcelona, scheduled for June 19. The demonstration is set to occur at the intersection of Aragó and Balmes streets, half an hour before the roadshow begins. Organizers criticize the event for privatizing public spaces and prioritizing tourism over local interests. Jordi Elgström of the Eixample Respira platform stated, “We say no to an urban model based on large-scale events that privatize public spaces, where public money is spent for the benefit of big tourism lobbies” .
The controversy intensifies as the Spanish Grand Prix is set to relocate from its longstanding venue at Montmeló, Barcelona, to a new hybrid street circuit in Madrid, named “Madring.” This move, effective from next year, has secured a 10-year deal to host F1 races until at least 2035. While the new circuit aims to merge Madrid’s identity with the racing world, local residents express concerns over potential noise levels and the impact on their neighborhoods .
Despite the opposition, the Madrid circuit has received initial approval from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and is designed by Studio Dromo, known for their work on other prominent F1 circuits . The upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled from May 30 to June 1, 2025, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, may mark
