Verstappen Shares F1 Insights with Rookie Bortoleto at Australian Grand Prix
Three-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen has revealed that he offered key tips and insights to rookie Gabriel Bortoleto during the Australian Grand Prix weekend. The Red Bull star spoke candidly about his supportive relationship with the Brazilian newcomer, who made his F1 debut with Sauber.
Bortoleto, a rising talent and protégé of veteran Fernando Alonso, has already started gaining attention in the paddock, not only for his potential on the track but also for his composed demeanor off it. Despite receiving mentorship from Alonso and being part of his management team, Bortoleto’s debut wasn’t without its challenges.
Ahead of his first Grand Prix, Bortoleto faced criticism from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who labeled him a “B driver.” The comment stirred controversy, but the 19-year-old responded with maturity, brushing aside the remarks and vowing to prove his worth on the grid. Despite Marko’s harsh evaluation, Bortoleto found support within the wider Red Bull circle — particularly from Verstappen himself.
Speaking to media ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, Verstappen opened up about his conversations with Bortoleto and how he has taken time to help guide the rookie during race weekends.
“I speak to Gabi [Bortoleto] quite a lot,” Verstappen said. “He’s a very nice guy. When he asks me questions, I don’t try to hide things. I’ve never been that kind of person on the grid.”
Verstappen even shared details about how he advised Bortoleto on tyre strategy shortly before the start of the Australian GP. The Dutchman recalled a moment just after the national anthem when Bortoleto approached him for advice regarding the track conditions.
“After the anthem, he came to me and asked, ‘Max, what are you going to do?’ I told him to go with intermediates,” Verstappen explained. “He was surprised and asked again, ‘Really? Really?!’ I said, ‘Yeah, inters. It’ll be fine. And if you’re not sure, ask your team to adjust something with the tyres — but inters are the way to go.’”
Verstappen’s willingness to share strategic advice — even revealing key insights related to Red Bull’s own decisions — showcases his respect for the young Brazilian and his desire to support emerging talent in the sport.
“It’s totally normal,” Verstappen added. “Your first race is always stressful and quite overwhelming. But Gabi is a great driver. He’s very passionate about Formula 1, and he’s a hard worker. I really like his attitude and his approach to racing.”
The gesture from Verstappen reflects a spirit of camaraderie in the highly competitive world of Formula 1, where rivalries often dominate headlines. While competition remains fierce on the track, Verstappen’s mentorship toward Bortoleto highlights a rare moment of guidance and goodwill between a seasoned champion and a determined rookie.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Bortoleto to see how he builds on this early support and proves himself among the elite on the Formula 1 grid.
