Verstappen TAUNTS F1 rival with powerful championship claim
Max Verstappen Claims Fourth F1 Title and Taunts Rival Zak Brown
Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive Formula 1 drivers’ championship during the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, delivering a decisive blow to his closest rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Despite Red Bull’s uncharacteristic lack of pace, Verstappen’s fifth-place finish, one spot ahead of Norris, clinched the title.
Although Verstappen’s performance in Nevada was subdued, he wasted no time celebrating and took the opportunity to respond to comments made by McLaren CEO Zak Brown.
Brown, in an earlier interview on the Beyond the Grid podcast, had praised Verstappen’s skill but suggested the Dutchman would struggle to win a championship in a car other than Red Bull’s.
Verstappen addressed Brown directly in the aftermath of the race. When Brown congratulated him, Verstappen responded with a pointed remark, hinting at his belief that he could win titles regardless of the car he drove.
Speaking later to Dutch media, Verstappen doubled down, claiming he would have clinched the championship earlier if he had been driving the McLaren.
“Would I have become champion in the McLaren? Yes, and much earlier too,” Verstappen told De Telegraaf.
He also reflected on the unexpected circumstances that helped secure his title, particularly rain in Brazil that disrupted his competitors.
Verstappen’s win in Las Vegas ended what he admitted was a more competitive season than anticipated.
Despite the challenges, he expressed relief at finally sealing the championship, allowing him to approach the remaining races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi with less pressure.
Still, the four-time champion emphasized his intent to perform well in the final rounds, seeking to finish the season on a high note.
Relaxing after his triumph, Verstappen revealed he was already celebrating with drinks. “I’ve had four beers and two gin and tonics now,” he shared.
While acknowledging that the Las Vegas race didn’t go as planned, he noted it exceeded expectations given Red Bull’s struggles.
With this victory, Verstappen cements his place as one of the sport’s all-time greats, though his playful jabs at Brown reflect a driver not only confident in his abilities but unafraid to defend his legacy.
As the season winds down, Verstappen seems poised to enjoy his success while aiming for strong finishes in the remaining races.
