Red Bull boss Horner urges mid‑season upgrades to help Verstappen close in on McLaren 🏁

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has issued a rallying cry to his engineers and aerodynamicists ahead of the summer break, demanding substantial upgrades to the underperforming RB21 to give Max Verstappen the platform needed to rejoin the title fight against McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Verstappen has struggled to keep pace on tracks favouring clean airflow and strong straightline performance this season, and currently trails both McLaren drivers in the drivers’ standings. Horner stressed that Red Bull must significantly enhance the RB21’s performance — particularly its aerodynamic package and rear-end stability — to assist Verstappen in reducing the deficit. The team principal emphasized that without prompt upgrades, Verstappen will remain at a strategic disadvantage  .

These remarks came in the wake of Verstappen’s tense Spanish Grand Prix, where a high-stakes collision with George Russell relegated him to a 10-second penalty—pushing him to the brink of a potential race suspension. Even after Red Bull issued clear internal instructions during the race to manage the situation, Horner lamented the penalties and last weekend’s frustrations, reinforcing that faster machinery was the long-term solution .

Horner’s message signals that Red Bull is pivoting into high gear over the summer. With upgrades currently being developed, the team will aim for dramatic improvements when racing resumes in Belgium next month.

Meanwhile, Horner dismissed recent speculation that Verstappen could defect to a rival like Aston Martin or Mercedes, confirming his commitment to the team and pinpointing the need for faster upgrades as the primary focus   . Reiterating Verstappen’s contract through 2028, Horner concluded: “Sort the car out, and there’s no question about next season”
