The sixth race of the 2025 Formula 1 season is set to unfold at the Miami International Autodrome, with anticipation running high following a weekend filled with drama and standout performances. Despite a setback in Saturday’s sprint race, Max Verstappen bounced back to clinch pole position for Sunday’s main event, demonstrating both his pace and resilience in a tightly contested qualifying session.

Verstappen had a disappointing sprint earlier in the weekend, where he received a 10-second time penalty for an unsafe release that forced Kimi Antonelli into evasive action in the pit lane. Nevertheless, the reigning champion recovered superbly during qualifying, posting a fastest time of 1:26.204 to secure the top spot on the grid for the third time this season.

Lando Norris, who won the sprint race for McLaren alongside teammate Oscar Piastri in a dominant 1-2 finish, continued his strong form into qualifying. Norris came within a fraction of pole, missing out by just 0.065 seconds, and will line up alongside Verstappen on the front row.

The surprise of the day was Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, who delivered an exceptional performance to secure third place. The Italian newcomer showed composure and confidence, managing to outqualify teammate George Russell and split the McLaren drivers. Antonelli’s best lap was just 0.067 seconds off Verstappen’s, confirming his growing reputation as one of the grid’s most exciting young talents.

Oscar Piastri will start from fourth, narrowly ahead of Russell, who rounded out the top five. Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon provided a strong showing for Williams, qualifying sixth and seventh respectively. It was a particularly important performance for Williams, as both drivers placed ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who had to settle for eighth.

Esteban Ocon impressed for Haas by reaching Q3 and taking ninth place on the grid, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda, who completed the top ten for Red Bull.

Outside the top ten, several well-known names faced difficulties. Isack Hadjar in the Racing Bulls just missed out on Q3 and will start from 11th. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton also had a challenging session and will begin the race from 12th, ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Jack Doohan (Alpine), and Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), who rounded out the Q2 eliminations.

Nico Hülkenberg, Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, and Ollie Bearman were all knocked out in Q1. Alonso, Stroll, and Bearman in particular struggled for pace all weekend and will be looking for opportunities to move up the order during the race.

Despite his sprint race penalty, Verstappen’s pole position remains intact as no grid penalties were issued following qualifying. This means the grid order determined on Saturday afternoon stands as final.
