The grid is officially set for the 2025 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix after an action-packed qualifying session at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. This weekend marks the ninth round of the F1 season, and the championship battle is heating up as McLaren asserts its dominance on the grid.
Oscar Piastri will start Sunday’s race from pole position, continuing his impressive campaign and extending his lead in the championship standings. The Australian driver, who’s shown remarkable form throughout the year, will be chasing his first-ever Spanish Grand Prix victory. He’ll have a strong chance of securing the win, especially considering that 24 of the past 34 races at this track have been won from pole.
Joining Piastri on the front row is his McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The British driver will be looking to convert his strong qualifying into a victory and help McLaren further cement its commanding position in the constructors’ standings. It’s the first front-row lockout for McLaren this season and a sign of the team’s growing strength.
Behind the leading McLarens, reigning world champion Max Verstappen will line up third in his Red Bull. While the Dutchman has enjoyed past success in Barcelona, he’ll need to dig deep and produce something extraordinary if he hopes to leapfrog both McLarens when the lights go out.
Mercedes driver George Russell put in a solid performance to secure fourth place on the grid, a welcome return to form after a difficult outing in Monaco. Russell will start just ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who lines up fifth. The seven-time world champion managed to out-qualify his teammate Charles Leclerc for only the second time this season.
Leclerc will start from seventh on Sunday, just behind Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, who impressed once again by qualifying sixth. The top 10 is rounded out by Pierre Gasly in the Alpine, Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.
Further down the order, Alex Albon in the Williams will begin from 11th, ahead of Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson. Lance Stroll starts 14th for Aston Martin, with Ollie Bearman (Haas), Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber), and Esteban Ocon (Haas) filling the next three spots.
Carlos Sainz will have a challenging race ahead from 18th in the second Williams, while Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda complete the back row.
