Cadillac has officially been granted approval to join the Formula 1 grid as the sport’s 11th team in 2026, following a final decision by F1 and the FIA.

The announcement, made jointly by F1 and the FIA on Friday, comes after months of anticipation following General Motors’ initial agreement in principle to enter the world championship.

“The FIA and Formula 1 can confirm that, following the completion of their respective sporting, technical, and commercial assessments, the application by General Motors and TWG Motorsports to bring a Cadillac team to the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2026 has been approved,” the statement read.

With the official go-ahead, Cadillac can now fully accelerate its preparations for the 2026 season.

“For years, we have worked closely with GM to build a solid foundation for an exceptional F1 entry,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports. “With today’s final approval, we are pushing forward expanding our facilities, advancing cutting-edge technologies, and recruiting top-tier talent.”

GM President Mark Reuss added, “We deeply appreciate the support from the FIA and Formula 1 leadership. The excitement only grows as we prepare to showcase GM’s engineering expertise on the prestigious global F1 stage.”

Cadillac’s Road to the Grid

The American outfit has already named Graeme Lowdon as team principal and Russ O’Blenes as CEO of TWG GM Performance Power Units. Initially, the team will use Ferrari engines before developing its own power unit to transition into a full-fledged works team in the future.

Lowdon described the approval as a landmark moment, stating, “I couldn’t be prouder of the dedication shown by the entire Cadillac Formula 1 Team. This announcement is another step toward getting on the grid, and we’re eager to give fans a new team to support.”

A ‘Transformative Moment’ for F1

F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed Cadillac’s entry, emphasizing its significance for the sport’s evolution. “General Motors’ commitment to bringing a Cadillac team to Formula 1 reflects the growing appeal and global reach of our sport. We appreciate GM and TWG’s constructive engagement and look forward to seeing them on the grid in 2026.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also hailed the decision, calling it a pivotal moment in F1’s history. “Expanding the FIA Formula One Championship to an 11th team in 2026 is a milestone. GM and Cadillac bring fresh energy to the sport, aligning with the new 2026 FIA regulations and shaping an exciting new era for Formula 1. Their presence will inspire future competitors and fans alike.”

With the approval finalized, Cadillac’s entry marks a new chapter in Formula 1, setting the stage for a highly competitive 2026 season.
