Tensions flared at the Spanish Grand Prix as 2016 Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg called for Max Verstappen to be disqualified following a controversial incident with Mercedes driver George Russell. The heated clash, which occurred shortly after a safety car restart, resulted in a 10-second time penalty for Verstappen and saw him demoted from fifth to tenth place in the final race standings.
The drama unfolded when Verstappen appeared to intentionally collide with Russell during the restart phase of the race. The two drivers made contact twice in a span of just a few laps. The first incident occurred into Turn 1, which led Red Bull to instruct Verstappen to hand back the position to avoid a formal penalty. However, Verstappen was visibly frustrated by the team’s decision. In a dramatic sequence, the Dutch driver initially looked to comply, slowing down as if to let Russell pass, only to veer back toward the Mercedes car in an aggressive maneuver before accelerating to maintain his position.
Eventually, Verstappen did yield the position, but the stewards reviewed the footage and handed him a 10-second time penalty post-race. That dropped him to 10th place in the final classification and further fueled the championship drama.
