Lance Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix Due to Recurring Wrist Injury
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll has withdrawn from the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, citing persistent pain in his right wrist and hand. The discomfort is linked to injuries sustained in a 2023 cycling accident, where Stroll suffered multiple fractures. Despite qualifying 14th at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, medical advice prompted the decision for Stroll to undergo surgery, sidelining him for the race weekend.
Formula 1 regulations stipulate that a driver must participate in at least one session before the race to be eligible to compete. As a result, Aston Martin’s reserve driver, Felipe Drugovich, cannot replace Stroll for this event. Consequently, the race will proceed with 19 drivers, with Fernando Alonso representing Aston Martin.
Stroll’s ongoing issues trace back to his 2023 accident, which also affected his participation in pre-season testing. The team has not confirmed his availability for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix on June 15.
In qualifying, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri secured pole position, leading a front-row lockout with teammate Lando Norris. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen qualified third, followed by Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.
Stroll’s withdrawal marks another setback for Aston Martin in a challenging season, as the team continues to address performance and reliability issues.
